Urology |
Urology deals with the surgical treatment of diseases of the genito urinary system - (kidney, ureter, bladder, penis & testis) in both male and female patients.
Typical Urological Disorders Include:
- Loss of Bladder Control
Loss of bladder control can men, women and children of all ages. Because of the social difficulties it can create, some people are uncomfortable talking about loss of bladder control with a urologist. Instead they deal with the situation quietly, assuming that nothing can be done. They may stay at home more, or confine their activities to an area within a short distance to restroom facilities.
- Impotency
Impotence is a widespread problem that affects millions of men. It may also occur at any age and at any time in a man's sexual life. While impotence is a problem for men, it also affects couples and families. A man who is impotent is persistently unable to get or keep an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. The good news is that due to recent medical advances, more and more men are discovering that they may overcome impotence and the surrounding feelings of frustration, embarrassment and tension. Please see an urologist for further information and advice.
- BPH
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate gland becomes much enlarged and may cause problems associated with urination. BPH can raise PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels two to three times higher than the normal level. An increased PSA level does not indicate cancer, but the higher the PSA level, the higher the chance of having cancer. Some of the signs of BPH and prostate cancer are the same; however, having BPH does not seem to increase the chances of developing prostate cancer. A man who has BPH may also have undetected prostate cancer at the same time or may develop prostate cancer in the future.
